How local restaurants turn one-time visitors into regulars
Every restaurant owner knows the economics instinctively: the first visit is expensive (they had to find you), and every visit after that is nearly free. The whole game is the second visit. Here's the playbook we see working for neighborhood restaurants — none of it requires learning new software, and most of it costs nothing.
1. Win the moment they Google you back
A customer deciding on a repeat visit almost always searches your name first — and what they find decides what happens next. Three things matter most: your Google Business Profile is claimed and current (hours especially — a wrong 'Closed' at 6pm kills a table), your photos look like tonight's food, and your website loads fast on a phone and shows the menu as real text, not a blurry PDF.
2. Give regulars a direct way to order
If the only online button you offer is a delivery marketplace, you're paying 15–30% commission on your most loyal customers — the exact people who'd happily order direct. An ordering page on your own site turns your best customers into your most profitable ones. Put the link on the receipt, the counter, and the takeout bag.
3. Build the smallest possible list
You don't need a marketing platform. You need a way to reach people who already love you. A simple signup — a QR code at the register offering a first-order discount, birthdays, or early access to specials — gets phone numbers and emails from your happiest customers. Even one thoughtful message a month ('soft-shell crab is back this weekend') outperforms any ad you could buy, because it lands with people who already chose you.
4. Ask for the review at the right moment
Reviews are compounding interest for local businesses. The right ask is specific and timed: when someone compliments the food in person, that's the moment — 'that means a lot, would you drop that in a Google review?' A card or QR at the register lowers the friction. Never buy or fake reviews; platforms detect it, customers smell it, and one exposure costs more trust than a hundred real reviews earn.
5. Make the website do the remembering
Specials, seasonal menus, events, catering — the reason to come back should be visible the moment someone lands on your site. A stale website tells returning customers nothing has changed; a current one gives them a reason to book Friday.
This is the part we handle at Catamaran Studios: a fast site that's always current — you text us the change, we make it, usually same day. Paired with direct ordering, it's the infrastructure for everything above, at a flat monthly rate.
